I sleep with a Nova memory foam mattress topper (bought from Costco in Canada) and found it very good. This summer I sublet an apartment for a couple of months and ordered a Serta 3-pound memory foam (supposedly a memory form) mattress topper. It was already on the bed when I arrived at the apartment. I immediately felt that it was not actually memory foam. Then I looked at the actual topper and found that it was just foam, which is quite different from memory foam. I definitely would not recommend this particular brand. In my opinion, the label “memory foam” was a false label.
Help answer the question about memory foam topper
Do I need to use the pad that my memory foam topper came with?
question is pretty self-explanitory, but I bought memory foam topper a 2 inch memory foam matress topper that came with a white zipper pouch / pad. Do I need to keep my foam in this? I find it too hot to sleep, and I'd rather just put the foam directly on to of the matress, under the sheets.
Before you go out and acquire a memory foam toppers for your bed, you may wish to consider a couple of things. Almost everybody with a mattress of visco memory foam appears to love it, raving about how they get such good nights of sleep with such good support. And who can forget the incontrovertible fact that this foam'remembers' its original shape in the morning, and returns to it after you get up? All of this is great, but a topper simply may not give you the same benefits as a complete foam bed.
What makes a memory foam bed work so well is a combination of things. The top layer of foam is what softens when exposed to body heat, changing to adjust itself to your contours. But the memory foam in lower levels of the mattress keeps its shape and firmness, memory foam topper since the heat doesn't reach down that far. That quality of support provided by the lower level of the foam stems from its high density ; in a few cases as much as eight pounds per cubic foot. This very firm support is just as crucial to the function of the memory mattress as the softening and changing of the higher level.
And that's where the difficulty comes in with a memory foam mattress topper. If it is's not sitting on something almost as firm as the lower levels of foam in a regular visco memory foam mattress, then the topper doesn't have the support it wishes. Mix this with the fact that many regular mattresses have places where they sag to some level, and a layer of memory foam on top will sag right along with them. This may pretty much annul any benefits that would have been derived from the memory foam topper.
All of this suggests that you may want to think carefully about simply buying a memory foam topper and sticking it on top of your usual bed. Unless you have already got a particularly firm mattress, fully flat with no sagging anywhere, then the foam in the topper won't have enough underlying support to provide you with the advantages of the best memory foam mattress. If you're going to spend the money anyhow, you may as well go for the entire bed. That might be preferable to never getting all the benefits you were hoping to gain.
